India Trip – Day Three (Shopping in India…)

The plan for today was to get a new sari for Sridevi to match my outfit for the upcoming anniversary party and that meant shopping. A close friend of the family (Auntie) had been consulted and the rest was about to be history. “Raj Kumar” (sp?) had us firmly in hand and that meant being treated like royalty.

   v.s.

So here we are in India, shopping. This is an experience that must be had to be truly understood. The juxtaposition of has and has not, or maybe new vs yesterday is unbelievable. As an example, you can by a low quality, but still passable cotton dress shirt from a street vendor for 60 rupees (about $1.20 today), OR you can go literally across the street into what can only be described as the Saks Fifth Avenue of Vizag and pay 1200 rupees ($25.00) for a nice shirt with a designer label while being waited on by literally 8 people.

Now, look at those two pictures above…  The one on the left is inside the store.  The one on the right is taken from the door of the store looking across the street.  I’m told the “Hollywood shoe store” used to be a good place to buy shoes, and upstairs, you can by a ceiling fan for a good price still.

The jeans that I bought say that they are Diesel and even have some Italian on the label, but I have my doubts as the the authenticity.  However, they are comfortable and of good quality so I think they are probably real!  All told Sridevi’s parents got me three short sleeve dress shirts (I can’t stress enough the importance of these in this climate!!!) and the jeans as a gift.  I bought Sridevi a beautiful sari.  Here, you buy a piece of cloth and they stitch the sari for you, so we had two sari’s stitched, which we will pick up in a day or two.

Now, off to her sister’s favorite tailor (the family standard you might say…).  I have been told that he does the best work, and judging by the shop, he definitely doesn’t invest in the decor.  He must be spending it on the tailors!

Just a quick note, during the drive we got into an amazing traffic situation.  We were turning across traffic, and at one point we had cars going around us on both the left and right, all the while we had scooters and pedestrians amidst the crush and halfway through the turn, we met a car making the opposite turn…  The sheer chaos amazes me, and yet I have only seen a single accident since we got here, not counting the motorcycle and the scooter that have bumped us.  While everyone loves the horn (I asked, and ours has been fixed already once from over use…) there is generally a calm camaraderie to the crush.  No real temper tantrums here.

I know that there are hundreds of photos already, but more here…

India, 2008 – Day Two

With a 12.5 hour time differenc, jet lag was high on my mind, but I managed to stay up till 7:00 PM and 13 hours later, feeling fully refreshed, even the 8:00 AM 90 degree heat and humidity couldn’t dampen the mood.  That is probably a good thing, because it is likely to be a pretty common occurence here.

We headed off at around three to do some shopping and visit some recently found and excavated Budhist ruins a bit north of Vizag proper.  Driving here continues to be something out of a Kafka story, with huge trucks narrowly missing whole families on mopeds.

This doesn’t make India unique though, just very different than the orderly streets of the US, so I promise not to keep coming back to it.  Suffice it to say though, that I have only noticed a single stop light in two days.  The whole experience it more like a huge dance hall shared between a modern dance company, a waltz competition, a classical ballet and an Bollywood routine.  ALL AT ONCE!!!  Toss in a square dance troupe with no caller and here we are!  :D

We went about 20-30 killometers north, up the coast, passing Sri’s engineering school on the way (she made this commute daily on a scooter).  I managed to get a series of photos of a couple of ox dragging a huge load of palms through traffic, which parted with no seeming difficulty (nor lessening of pace) for the wide load going about 2 kilometers an hour.

Seemingly in the middle of no where a well maintained road with no sign headed to the left and after consulting a local, Bala headed into the hills.  The signage is somewhat sureal with a slightly military looking sign pointing out a 2200 year old budhist monestery with a modest fence and no other markers…  We toured the ruins on our own before clambering back into the car and heading further up the coast to a slightly more museum like place where a guide gave us a wonderful description of both these ruins and the ones that we had just left…  Suffice it to say, but he was very knowledgeable and he gave us very definitive information about the ruins.  While I’m not sure how they know this much daily detail, it was great to learn which parts of the “ruins” where recreations and which were original.

Don’t miss the pictures (India, 2008 – Day Two Photos)

A quick one, photos from day one…

India, 2008 – Day One

I left Portland, OR, USA on Thursday, the 9th of October at about 4:00 PM PST…  Needless to say, two 10 hour flights, a 1.5 hour flight and about 5.5 hours of layover later, it was 9:00 AM IST on Saturday the 11th in India…  I  saw an old airport in Amsterdam and a shiny new international airport in Hyderabad, but landed in a scene right out of the old days.  The Vizag Airport of today is a worn but usable building in the flatlands near the sea.

You can see the hulking concrete expanse of what will be the very modern international airport, but not for at least 6 months.  The bus from the plane skirts the new terminal passes the other planes on the runway and zips around the corner in the oppressive, but not unbearable heat and we pull up at the single gate.  Elbows and shoulders get me my bags and I roll them out…

Amidst the crush of sheer humanity, dressed as if she was in Portland, Sri darts forward and I am home.  A hug for Bala and then my bags are whisked away for me…  Amidst the cacophony of horns, everything has a horn, from the moped to the bus, we zip (the only word for driving here) in and out of traffic…

First stop is Sri’s oldest Aunt’s house,it is family tradition to always stop their first, where I meet her uncle and get a quick hit of caffene, hidden deep in the chai that I love from Sri.  Our second stop is home!

Once home, lunch and visitors.  In some ways, the home is exactly as described and in others, bears no resemblance whatsoever…  The smooth, cool concrete of the floor is comforting as is the bustle of activity from the kitchen.  Construction here is very different from home or even Europe and I’ll touch on that in a later post, with photos.

They have a wonderful terrace at the front of the house, and as they basically live on the second floor it puts you in the street, but also allows you to be out of the street.  The street is always going, mopeds, bikes, motorcylcles, trucks, cars, people, even a dog or two.

I caught a bright orange drangon fly taking a break on a wire and I love the moment it captures…

Politics, the left and the right…

I’m going to go out on a bit of a winger here and just put this out there. 60% to 70% of the right and the left are basically in the middle and have the same goals. However, we look at things through very different filters. The left (me) is inhabited by people who see in gray scale. We have very few absolutes.  We like to “understand” people and motives.  I consider the idea that one person is good and another evil (or even right and wrong) to be a a lazy cop out.We tend to be very empathetic.  These are the us and we people, always searching for reasons why we aren’t better than others.

The right however is populated by people who think in terms of right & wrong, good & evil, and black & white. They consider the thought of a gray to be a weakness. They find it difficult to empathize with the enemy; with anyone with whom they disagree.  Solutions are broad ideas and the ends justify the means. Often the details get in their way, but they are very good at looking beyond.

Lets talk about the fringe though…  I find the groups I just lined out to be well intentioned.  However, there is a third group that I have trouble with.  This is the group that is in it for themselves.  They vote to save a buck on taxes today.  They willingly impinge their own honor for a few bucks.  Interestingly, this is the same group that follows Ron Paul, but they really don’t understand him.  Ron basically wants a level playing field.  PERIOD!  But this is a group who just wants their own tax break.  They have no problem taking government services either though.  Basically, these are bullies.

They want special deals and deductions.  They want to pay less and get more.  They don’t believe in the system, but they are willing to milk it!  This is a bunch of libertarians and republicans espousing their lassiez-faire policies, but financing it with a beer and wine distributership that is only a viable business because of the incredible regulatory burdens that protect it!  This is a group of people who have and who don’t want to play fair, so they lie and cheat.  And they are the first people that Ron Paul would strike down!

Of course, as someone on the left, I’m smarter than you and my empathetic nature lets me see that those on the right see black and white…  Or maybe its just too late…

This is a sad state…

In all honesty, I am ready to vote for Tina Fey!

McCain! DID YOU HEAR THAT?!??
When George Bush was elected I thought it couldn’t get any worse, but YOU CHOSE someone that makes you worse!!! Yes, his dad chose Quayle… Who we haven’t heard from since, but YOU CHOSE PALIN!!??!!?
OK, enough. I give!!!
At this point, I am not even calling your judgement into question. Your judgement isn’t even on the table anymore!
Your diehard supports can’t even support you anymore… You are left with the christian blind as your only support, and they don’t even like you. You had convinced me over the years that you weren’t an idiot. All of 20 seconds in an interview and your choice for VP has reversed that. In fact, her hour and a half at a debate has only made things WORSE. Can we say answer the question??

To Debate or Not?

Since everyone else is putting in their two cents… It really boils down to a simple thing. Why is this debate over $700 Billion such an emergency? What is new this week?

When I double the cost of college for my kids, I want to hear the arguments. I want to hear Obama and McCain talk over this issue in public. Don’t get me wrong, not being able to get a home loan can be scary, but the truth is, we aren’t dying as a result. This isn’t Katrina. We don’t have people dying on the streets.

What we do have is some scared execs. Because in truth, they have a LONG way to fall. Suspend your campaign and head back to Washington? Oh, the indignation. Is he CRAZY? Maybe he just has REALLY bad judgment.

We have already seen what he’ll do to get ahead…
1) Returning from the war, to an injured wife, he took his show on the road and slept around.
2) He found a rich woman and marries her BEFORE he has a divorce.
3) In spite of having a clear personal fiduciary conflict, he attempts to intervene in the Keating Scandal.
4) Time after time, he asks to remove regulation from industries.
5) He chooses a running mate with ZERO experience and a bad track record on transparency, based soly on her ability to excite the christian mom.

His judgment seems to revolve around the idea that the ends justify the means.

GW has done two things during his tenure. The first is that he has presided over the bankrupting of our country. The second though, is that he has removed all transparency from the system. His administration has fought all laws that require transparency. We are supposed to have a government by the PEOPLE, for the PEOPLE. To do that, we, the PEOPLE, need to know what is going on.

What does that mean today? That means that McCain had better regrow a set and go take his lumps like a man. Bring us transparency. Stand up and explain that in the past, he pushed to remove the regulation that was put into place to keep this from happening, but that he was mistaken. That he is personally sorry for that. Apologize for selecting Palin and ask Ron Paul to join his ticket.

Actually, maybe Obama should just appoint Ron Paul his Treasury Secretary Designate and this thing will be all over!

Admittedly, this guy doesn’t like McCain…

This guy from the NY Times sure doesn’t like McCain much, but he does have a few good points. McCain did sponsor the McCain-Feingold campain finance law, but he is also a HUGE proponent of exactly the kind of regulation that got us here, namely NONE!

In my belief, government has a few basic duties:
1) National Security (Military, Environment)
2) Protection of the weak (Old, Young, Disabled)
3) Education
4) Regulation of the free market (Short-term interests are NEVER good for ANYONE, and in the end, WE aren’t the shareholders anyway.)

Anyone who runs for office is going to be elitist (by definition?), but at least lets have a realistic elitist!

Is Time equal to Money?

In physics, energy and mass are bound by the speed of light squared.  What makes it the speed of light?  Well, actually the speed of light is relative to time, and constant, really, we are using time to equate energy and mass.  Back to project management/design/development/etc…

Can we just simply say that Money = Time?   Well that doesnt seem right.  It can’t be that simple or clean.  So how do they actually relate?  We need a co-efficient of some sort.  How about complexity?  The problem here is that complexity isn’t a constant.  In fact, both money and time are more constant than complexity.  Prior to Einstien though, the assumption was that Mass was a constant.  He flipped that around and made the speed of light the constant.  So maybe complexity is a factor of a relationship between a constant (features?) and Time and Money.

So maybe we take features and make it the speed of light.  Now we square it and get complexity. Now we have Complexity = (Features Squared).  Lets use money for energy because after all, money is the damage, right?

Money = Time * (Features Squared)

Of course that whole “Mythical Man Month” thing throws a hell of a wrench into the pie.  So does the argument that python is more productive than java (or c#, Perl, php, Assembler, C++).  But in the end, if we correct for productivity (people AND technology platform), then we get pretty close.
